A Fifth of Newlyweds Expect to Divorce

As many as 21 per cent of recently engaged or married couples expect to get divorced according to research undertaken by vouchercloud.com. An additional seven per cent of respondents reported that they had signed a prenuptial agreement in order to lessen the potentially damaging effects that a divorce may have. The majority of respondents did not consider divorce to be a likely outcome of their unions, however with 57 per cent stating that they expected their marriages to last forever. Of the remaining 43 per cent, 22 per cent stated that they accepted that a divorce may be possible whilst the other 21 per cent simply stated that they believed that their marriages would not last. Of those that expected their marriage to end in divorce, 44 per cent felt that it was unrealistic to remain married to the same person throughout their entire lives, 36 per cent felt that exterior influences would bring about the demise of their marriage and 27 per cent stated that, as people change over time, there was no way of guaranteeing that they and their spouses would still be compatible in the future. Of those respondents that indicated that they expected their marriages to end in divorce, 48 per cent reported that they did not think that their partners would agree with their assessment.
