Divorce Advice: Surviving and Enjoying Christmas Day

Following on from our recent post on why recently divorced couples should put their differences aside at Christmas, we felt it appropriate to discuss how divorced parents can make the most of Christmas day and ensure that it is enjoyable for both them and their children. The first thing that a divorced couple will need to consider when making arrangements for Christmas Day is whether or not they can spend the day in each other’s company without creating a negative atmosphere. If they can, then both can spend Christmas Day at the children’s usual place of residence. It would be advisable, however, particularly if the children are young, to discuss the day with them beforehand and carefully explain to them that whilst both of their parents will be spending Christmas Day with them, their divorce is still final as this will ensure that the children do not become confused. Such arrangements are rarely practicable, though, and it may be necessary to split the children’s time between both parents as a result. Whilst Christmas Day with mum and Boxing Day with dad may seem like straightforward arrangements, however, it is advisable that the resident parent goes the extra mile for the non-resident parent. This can include ensuring that they are given the opportunity to talk to their children more regularly over the Christmas period. A phone call before the children go to bed on Christmas Eve is the very least they should be offered and should ideally be allowed to see the children for a few hours on this day. Above all else, divorced parents should remember that a child’s experiences of Christmas will stay with them forever and it would be a great shame if they could not spend time with each of their parents over the Festive season.
