Divorce Around the World: Over 10,000 Couples file for Divorce every day in China

Divorce in the UK may be Quickie Divorce’s area of expertise, but divorce is a global phenomenon so we have a keen interest in what’s happening in other countries’ ‘divorce arenas’ too. So from today we’re going to be reporting on a variety of interesting divorce-related topics from around the world, starting with reports on China’s growing divorce rate. According to figures that have been released by the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs 2.8 million couples filed for divorce in the first three quarters of 2011. To put that figure into context, that means that as many as 10,000 couples are currently filing for a divorce every day in the world’s most populous nation. These astronomically high figures were not necessarily unexpected, however. China’s divorce rate has consistently grown since the middle of the 1970’s, a pattern that many academics attribute to the country having adopted a free market economy following the Cultural Revolution having come to an end in 1976. The Chinese Government recently introduced controversial new laws in an effort to curtail the country’s spiralling divorce rate with all matrimonial property now being transferred to its original owner following a divorce. The country’s post office are even doing their bit with their ‘love letter service’ which sees spouses write letters for their nearest and dearest on their wedding days which are then sent to a sorting office before being forwarded to each spouse on their seventh wedding anniversary. For all of these efforts, though, China’s divorce rate shows no signs of abating.
