Anne Batho, a Psychology Masters student at Leeds Metropolitan University, is conducting a survey to ascertain whether sending one positive and affectionate text message to our partners everyday could have a positive effect on our relationships and reduce the likelihood of divorce. Batho has noted that prior studies have shown that couples that engage in more affectionate behaviour are generally happier in their relationships and that, furthermore, people that report being happier in their relationships are less likely to divorce. She also notes, however, that, due to our busy lifestyles, it becoming increasingly difficult for spouses to maintain communication with one another, stating that due to increasing commitments married couples are often “like ships that pass in the night.” As, Batho argues, psychologists have observed a link between regular affectionate messages being exchanged between spouses and increased feelings of intimacy and closeness that, it is believed, strengthens marriages. Via her study, the results of which will be published in September, Batho is hoping to discover how positive an impact one positive text message a day can have on couples’ marriages and whether it also results in a decreased likelihood of divorce.
