Can I get a Quickie Divorce?

You may think that a quickie divorce is only possible for the rich, but nothing could be further from the truth. Provided you and your spouse agree to the divorce, then you too can get a quickie divorce – and it doesn’t need to cost a fortune either. There’s a very popular misconception that needs to be cleared up, though: even quick divorces take weeks to finalise. Not days – and certainly not minutes as media reports would lead you to believe. A good example of such misleading reports occurred following Nigella Lawson having successfully obtained a Decree Nisi several months ago. Whilst the granting of a Decree Nisi is a key part of the overall divorce procedure, and reports that it had taken only a matter of minutes for the court to grant the order to Nigella was accurate, proceedings had started several weeks previously and it would be at least six more before the divorce could be finalised. A Quickie Divorce is a casual phrase that must be placed in context. It is quick compared to the vast majority of divorces which generally take several months if uncontested and significantly longer when both parties do not agree. A well-managed divorce where both parties agree and act amicably can be finalised in as little as 12 weeks which, in our opinion, is a quick divorce indeed.
