Typical! Quickie Divorce has been away from the blogosphere for just one week and, having checked the recent news on divorce, has noticed that several big stories concerning marital separation have been published in its absence. Rather than report on each story in an individual post, then, we’ve decided to provide you with a summary of the top divorce stories that have been doing the rounds this past week. Enjoy: Kardashian Divorce Confirmed It seems appropriate to start with what is surely the biggest story concerning divorce this week: after just 72 days of marriage, reality TV star Kim Kardashian is divorcing her husband, NBA superstar Kris Humphries. Kardashian has since claimed that the couple remain on good terms whilst Humphries is reported to be ‘devastated’ by the split with further reports suggesting that he only discovered that Kardashian was filing for divorce this morning. The couple married in Montencito, California in August this year and are alleged to have earned as much as £11m through deals with publishers and television networks, prompting several observers to argue that the couple’s wedding was little more than a publicity stunt designed to garner profit. New Chinese Divorce Laws Face Further Criticism Quickie Divorce has already questioned the recent changes to China’s divorce laws. Yesterday, the Daily Telegraph reported on how these changes – which sees the spouse that purchased the matrimonial home become its sole owner in the event of a divorce – are leaving many women without homes following their marriages having ended. It was clear that the Chinese government needed to take action to curtail the country’s rising divorce rate. As many as one in three marriages now end in divorce in the world’s most populous nation and whilst this figure is favourable when compared to the divorce rates of western nations, it has been deemed to be unacceptable by the Chinese government. Unfortunately, their attempts to rectify this trend have done little more than produce a wealth of disapproval, with many claiming that these new laws exemplify the lack of status and justice that is affords to China’s female citizens. Russian Couples Discover Their Children were Swapped at Birth Because of Divorce Following a dispute over child support payments during a divorce haing led to a DNA test, two Russian couples have discovered that a medical centre accidentally swapped their daughters at birth. The test revealed that neither of the divorcing spouses were the biological parent of 12-year-old Irina and the couple therefore contacted the police. The authorities later tracked down Irina’s biological parents and the couple’s biological daughter, Anya. The children’s parents have since both been awarded £62,000 in compensation and have stated that they intend to use these additional funds to purchase homes that are closer to one another. They also confirmed that both children will now live with their biological parents. Child Obesity is now Regularly Used as an Argument in Divorce Courts Legal professionals in the U.S. have noted that more and more parents are alleging that their spouses are failing to provide their children with a healthy, balanced diet in the event of divorce leading to a dispute over custody, with many parents claiming that their children will be more likely to suffer from significant health problems and bullying if they reside with their soon to be ex-spouse. It may seem like any spouse that makes such an argument is clutching at straws, but lawyers have claimed that such arguments could be beneficial if a case is finely poised.
