Divorce Solicitor Sued for £2m over Alleged Negligence

The former wife of a doctor has been left living in a council flat and reliant on state benefits due to, she has claimed, negligence on the part of her divorce solicitor. Norma Wilson, a London property developer and nurse, has claimed that her solicitor, an employee of Herrington & Carmichael LLP, failed to act in her best interests and attempted to claim £2 million in damages from this individual as a result. Prior to her divorce, Ms Wilson resided with her husband, Dr Peter Wilson, in a five-bedroom mansion in Sunningdale, Berkshire, but was left with nothing and needed to move into a one-bedroom flat following her divorce, the court was informed. The couple, who divorced in 2006 and have two children together, had agreed to a settlement following Ms Wilson having received advice from an employee of Herrington & Carmichael. The agreement in question was not approved by a judge, however, with Ms Wilson claiming that this led to her needing to sell the matrimonial property for significantly less than it had been valued at and that, following her having used the proceeds to pay off her debts, she was left with nothing. Dr Wilson, in comparison, left the marriage with over £1m comprised of both assets and a lump sum. The case was settled on a confidential basis on the 10th June 2015.
