Man Signs £60,000 a Month Divorce Settlement by Mistake

A politician who signed a divorce settlement promising his former wife £60,000 every month has informed a court that he was unaware of what he was agreeing to as he was not wearing his glasses when he signed the document. The man, who has not been named, is believed to be a former politician from the Middle East whose wife and two children moved to the UK following them having separated. The pair later met at a restaurant and the wife presented her husband with a variety of documents – including the aforementioned agreement – which he proceeded to sign. The man claimed within his witness statement that he was under duress at the time as his wife had prevented him from seeing their children. He also noted that he did not have his reading glasses with him at the time and was unaware of what he was signing. In response to the husband’s claims Mr Justice Mostyn claimed that he found the man’s recollection of events hard to believe, but also that he found the £60,000 a month figure to be ‘absurd,’ claiming that a figure of £33,000 per month was more practicable.
