Now, we’ve all read the reports claiming that Facebook causes divorce and have scoffed at them appropriately. In this instance, however, the social media behemoth may well be to blame for a divorce – just not directly.

Rivky Stein, a 24-year-old woman from New York has setup a page on the social networking site within which she requests that her estranged husband grants her a divorce. The reason: Rivky and her husband are Jewish and, under Jewish law, a divorce cannot be granted until the husband consents to it by grating his wife what is known as a get and Rivky’s husband, Yoel Weiss, has insisted that he will not grant her a divorce until they have resolved matters concerning the custody of their two children.

Stein has claimed that she has not only created the page in order to help her obtain a divorce, but also to highlight the hardship faced by many Jewish women whose husbands refuse to grant them a divorce following separation, thus preventing them from marrying again.

The page has gathered 7,355 likes at the time of writing.
