Can I get a divorce online?

We all know by now that the start of a new year is the busiest period for those of us who operate within the divorce-sphere; the number of people looking to end their marriages all but doubles and – as this is also when we look to tighten our belts – many are certain to forego traditional solicitor-led services for more affordable providers offering users a divorce online. Whilst there are now a plethora of companies offering such services and the savings can be significant, though, it’s important that people are aware of when an online divorce is, and is not, suited to their needs. So, before you consider an online divorce, make sure that the following apply: Both parties agree to the divorce The solutions that are offered by companies such as Quickie Divorce are affordable for two main reasons. The first is that, as they operate online, they have lower running costs than traditional solicitors. The second is that they cater exclusively to couples that both agree they want a divorce. If one party refuses the divorce, the process becomes complicated and arguments must be made in court. As a result, the help of a solicitor will almost certainly be required. You agree on how finances should be divided Perhaps the biggest barrier for those looking to save on solicitor’s fees is the need to agree on how finances and assets should be divided between them and their spouse. Considering that couples must essentially divide what are, ultimately, items that represent their accumulated efforts, it’s entirely understandable that such negotiations can become fraught will ill-will, tension and even aggression. In such instances, solicitors are often needed to bring an objective and dispassionate approach to negotiations, as well as advise on whether expectations are unrealistic. Fortunately, many couples are now able to reach agreements without the need to instruct legal professionals and, when they also agree to their divorce, such couples can rest assured that a divorce online is almost certainly suitable. Many will also now prepare Consent Orders that make existing agreements legally binding and prevent future claims. You’ve agreed arrangements for your children Whilst it’s no longer necessary to have agreements for children in place before the courts will grant a divorce, it makes sense to put an agreement together if you haven’t already done so. Put simply, if there are no arrangements in place, this will almost certainly be because the parties disagree and both will probably require some legal advice as a result. Sadly, an online company will be unable to provide you with this, so it makes sense to kill two birds with one stone and let a solicitor deal with your divorce whilst simultaneously finalising arrangements for your children. You’re computer-savvy As obvious as it might sound, you’d be surprised how many people go down the online route only to find themselves surprised that they need to submit information online, check and respond to emails and so on. Like any company, online divorce providers will always do their best to accommodate their customers’ needs but, if you’re not terribly au fait with technology, you’re probably going to find getting divorced online to be a cumbersome and frustrating process. If you’re considering a divorce online, get in touch with Quickie Divorce’s advisers and find out how we can help you today.
