Will the Catholic Church ‘Soften’ it’s Stance on Divorce?

Several weeks ago, Pope Francis announced his intentions to reform the Catholic Church’s approach to a number of matters, one of the most notable being divorce.

Currently, members of the church that have become divorced are unable to remarry within the church unless they have had their marriage annulled by this institution. In order to obtain this, both husband and wife will need to attend a tribunal during which the decision to grant or not grant the couple an annulment will be decided.

Members of the Catholic church that become divorced and do not obtain a Catholic annulment (which can be both a complicated and expensive process) are also not permitted to take communion under any circumstances; something which irks many of those that are affected, particularly as the circumstances of and reasons for their divorce are not taken into consideration.

The prospect of relaxing these rules and allowing individuals who obtain civil divorces to both take communion and remarry via religious ceremonies was recently discussed and, whilst Pope Francis’s suggestions have been met with disapproval and animosity that has, according to reports, led to them being rejected, Quickie Divorce sincerely hopes that this is reconsidered.
